Attempted delivery query

I posted a packet out recorded delivery back on the 8th of January. The item was bought via Amazon. The buyer emailed me on Saturday to state their item had still not arrived yet even though it was past the maximum estimated date of 23rd (estimated delivery times on Amazon are a bit of a joke). I just checked the tracking information and it shows as being attempted on the 9th.
It doesn't mention anything about the packet being returned to me even though it's just gone past the 18 days that Royal Mail keep the items at their delivery office for. Usually when it's past their limit, they have a statement on the tracking that the item has been sent back to the sender, but that's not the case and it's still showing that the buyer can arrange redelivery. (Whether they still can I'm not sure obviously)
I've never had this happen before. I don't expect the buyer to lose out as not fair on them, but I don't have the items back in hand so not sure how to proceed really.
I have explained all the above to them, and have provided the tracking number. I expect the postman did not leave a card.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Whenever this has happened to me, I arrange a re-delivery to the buyer online. Enter your RD ref. no on the RM 'Track and Trace' - and on the screen where it shows the delivery was attempted, there is a link that will enable you to arrange a redelivery. Simply fill in the buyers address details, etc. Enter the buyers email address on the online form, not yours and they will receive the confirmation email that the parcel is set for a re-delivery on such-and-such day.
I have found that even if the buyer is then out when the re-delivery is set for, it will have bought you time and at worst delayed the item being returned to you. If you item again is not received by the buyer, 'Track and Trace' will show this. Again, arrange a further online delivery.
Hope this makes sense to you.0 -

Thanks for that...that's really useful and I'll bear it in mind for the future, should I ever be in that situation.0 -
Thanks for trying to help.
As its more than 18 days I can't have it redelivered to her using the online form. (I didn't check my emails on the Saturday)
If she had let me known earlier then there would have been a chance.
I don't know how to proceed now as buyer has paid, delivery has been attempted, after 2 weeks she lets me know she still hasn't received her item, but Royal Mail have still not returned the items to me so what is the next step? Or what should be the next step?0 -
You could try calling their local sorting office and see if they still have it and could try re delivering?

change the date to allow it
If the tracking hasnt updated then its likely still at the delivery office
18 days is the minimum retention
its rare for DO's to be having a 'clear out' every day.thus items can and will be held for more than 18 days in some cases
worth trying to get the delivery offices number and calling them.
Why RM still dont have this data online I will never know0 -
Sorry this is a little off topic, I had a parcel and went to pay the fee, but decided to reject it. Do you know how soon it would be sent back and if I'd have any chance of getting it now I've done this. I do understand if that is a flat NO, but felt it was worth a go asking

Princess x, is there a dispute centre on amazon? If it can be at the sort office for that long then there must be hope it wouldn't be on the way back yet? I've tried to call my sort office before but the number isn't answered, understandably I guess as it's always chockablock. Would the buyer be willing to visit theirs with ID on the off chance?
