Pilchards in tomato sauce are absolutely brilliant on a tight budget, and much, much cheaper than tuna, which is a species that is is real trouble from overfishing. It's quadrupled in price around here over the last two years.

Bags of frozen veg like sweetcorn and peas in the ice compartment of a small fridge are an invaluable standby and the budget ranges are terrific.

Whenever you cook mince, shove in a couple of handfuls of lentils. It makes the meat go much further and is another source of protein and fibre.

I don't mind in the slightest if the OP is so busy she hasn't had time to come back. I don't post here to be thanked - I post on OS boards because they are a fantastic way of sharing information and it's a great community. I benefited from reading incredibly helpful threads for years before I joined and started thanking and posting. If being thanked is what matters to you Tina, may I suggest the Grocery Challenge?
    Better is good enough.

someone mentioned tinned fish, well i have just recently refound mackerel in tom sauce @ approx 40p a tin on a slice of toast easy feeds 2 people and very good for your nutrition, even my son aged 9 loves this. i would freeze a loaf, get spuds make chips, bag of apples bag of oranges, cheap value cornflakes 35p, box powdered milk made up and put in fridge poured over cereal hard to tell difference, beans, few tins mackerel and still have change left from 15 quid then scour the reduced section, granted maybe not a highly nutritious meal plan but not bad and will fill him up short term, sorry cant help regarding housing but good luck.xxx

    Bread x 3 1.50 = 3@47p in most supermarkets
    Spread 75p
    Noodles x15 1.65 - value spaghetti is 37-39 p and would do 5-6 meals
    Pies x 4 1.00
    Pizza 60p
    Sausages 62p
    Rice 40p
    Mixed veg 75p
Soup mix 1.09 - split peas are much cheaper - 55-59p and IMO are easier to cook
    Peas x 4 32p
    Potatoes x 2 1.38 2 what? bags??
    Hot dogs 55p
    Eggs x 15 1.79
    Juice 42p
    Chicken livers 50p
    Fish potions x 4 85p - sainsbos value were 65p for 8 yesterday
    8pk of chicken burgers 97p
    Jar of curry sauce 23p

Breakfast is just toast x 2 slices with spread,
Lunches is noodles for 15 days, soup made with the soup mix for 6 days,

Curry and veg rice for 2 days
Fish finger chips and peas for 4 days
Chicken burger and jacket potato for 8 days
Chicken liver, veg and rice for 2 days
Double egg and chips for 1 day

I would add pack lard @ 44p from the savings to increase the calorie intake and save the spread for nicer things?

You won't starve but it is not good :(

I think at this level the cost of cooking needs to be planned in, so some cooking days, evening when a lot of stuff goes in the oven and then get frozen would be a good idea, even if only doing the jackets, roasts and some chips at the same time.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing

    The extra numbers are calories....

instant noodles....diet of a student. I suppose you can get by on it in the short term. OP really neeeds to find some more cash as that is only 863 calories per day when the recommended amount is 3 times that at about 2500 calories a day for a man. He'll end up being tired and sleeping instead of being energetic and looking for work. It's also not very balanced at all with no milk or dairy and insufficient vegetables and protein.
    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

Apologies for the derailment, but who are you to comment in this way? Are you medically qualified, to see that the poster may need some intervention?

Martin's mantra has always been and always will be:

    "Be nice to posters"

and I don't think that was particularly nice.

I don't know if it is short in protein as I don't know the kg of the person it is for or their exercise regime.

As I said it is far from healthy, just stop starvation :(

Another vote here for tinned fish, either mackeral or pilchards I find a big tin (400grms0.of either will make lunches for the week,on toast, fishcakes, in pasta, processed with mayo, sandwich filler, mixed with potato, or sweetcorn for a salad
