If OP (or anyone) is near a Countrywide store or often farm shops etc - get a sack of horse carrots for £2.99. Store in the cool and dry, enough carrots there for a few weeks!
I would go for fat and protein over cheap carbs - they'll just spike and crash blood sugar and keep you hungry.
Eggs and tinned tuna (Aldi and Morrisons have some for 50p/tin I think); vegetables are usually cheaper than fruit0 -
Does he like kids? If so get him an advanced CRB check and get him to help out at the local school as a TA or PE teacher where lunch would be provided.
Meals are not provided free for staff or volunteers at schools. Believe me, I wish they were! I'd have saved myself a fortune over the years!Because it's fun to have money!
