Will this white lie come back on me?

Don't give up on the job - just explain to your boss what happened. You've already proven yourself to them so they're unlikely to change their minds about you based on an understandable white lie. You didn't do anything wrong at your last job and you've obviously done really great at this new job - I think you're going to be ok

Definitely don't give up. Its not like you've lied about qualifications, duties performed or posts you've undertaken.
It sounds like your previous job has really knocked your confidence for six. Why else would you throw in the towel on a new job that could be fantastic for you. A carefully worded reason for leaving is all you need and the jobs yours.0 -
Do you know someone who still works at your last employer, can they find out what information they give for a reference?
For example, my current employee only give dates and job title for a reference they dont give out reason for leaving or even duties.Bad luck breeds bad luck.
Damn I'm doomed.0 -
ah yes maybe Jules, this is a very large international company so i was thinking thats what the ref would be.0

Don't mention the bullying, just say that you didn't actually get made redundant but it was on the wall and the atmosphere had changed and you didn't like being in an environment where others were unhappy, and just wanted to be somewhere more positive focussing on getting positive experience.Ok i left a job because i was being bullied. Stupid i know but i was worried and stressed out. With no jobs around at the time I took a voluntary job so there would be no gap on my cv. I had a quick chat with the manager and she just said start straight away no forms or anything. During this chat i lied and said id been made redundant ( I didnt want to go into the bullying thing in case they thought i was a troublemaker or a complainer)
The problem is they have now offered me a very good job with a high salary! they have given me forms to fill in for HR manager and need to give references, details of last employer, reason I left etc. Will they know from the standard ref i get that i wasnt in fact made redundant and left of my own free will? They also could speak to my old manager couldnt they?
I wish id just been honest!!
The old employer won't mention anything.0 -
Most references I see from large or even medium organisations are neutral: reason for leaving (just whether you were sacked, left of own accord - no detail), a tick box that didn't get disciplined, job title and sometimes salary. No details, skills or personal descriptions.ah yes maybe Jules, this is a very large international company so i was thinking thats what the ref would be.0 -
Don't cover one lie with another. Tell the truth. At the end of the day, if you posted any info about why you quit your last job on the net they will find it.Never Knowingly Understood.

Hello asdf
I completely understand where you are coming from as you don't want to bring out all of that misery in your life again.
I am sure that companies can not give out anything bad in your reference, and that they will just give a standard one like they give everyone.
Is there anyone you trust from your old company who you can get to write you a reference, it doesn't have to be someone in HR, maybe another manager?0 -
They can say bad stuff if its true and it may or may not be a standard reference.bubblebath wrote: »Hello asdf

If someone else gives a reference and gets found out they could well be sacked.
OP - just be honest and as you have already been working there they can obviously see they like you and its not like you were sacked or anything just decided to leave. That's not unusal for people to do. Just dont keep the lie going. We’ve had to remove your signature. I see your point.
I just can't see a company writing in a reference though 'so and so decided to leave after they were being bullied' and write it to that extent.
Very unprofessional on the company's behalf IMO.0
