Will this white lie come back on me?

Ok i left a job because i was being bullied. Stupid i know but i was worried and stressed out. With no jobs around at the time I took a voluntary job so there would be no gap on my cv. I had a quick chat with the manager and she just said start straight away no forms or anything. During this chat i lied and said id been made redundant ( I didnt want to go into the bullying thing in case they thought i was a troublemaker or a complainer)

The problem is they have now offered me a very good job with a high salary! they have given me forms to fill in for HR manager and need to give references, details of last employer, reason I left etc. Will they know from the standard ref i get that i wasnt in fact made redundant and left of my own free will? They also could speak to my old manager couldnt they?

I wish id just been honest!!

  • So fess up now! Just explain exactly what you've said in this post and point out you've had the chance to prove yourself which you were afraid you wouldn't have got any other way. Good luck.:o

My manager swears blind that she's interviewed staff who've been in the company longer than she has... I guess Im trying to say that I wouldn't worry too much about your original white lie for leaving. I would though, put on the form that you wanted to further your development, or that you were looking for new challenges rather than put that you felt bullied.

All reasons for leaving a job will be checked. Do not lie again or you will be found out.

I knew someone who got a job on the basis of her CV and then when she started they asked her to fill in the application form and her school qualifications (which she had lied about)!!

She didnt go back as she knew she'd be sacked!

We both had other friends working there and they said the boss would not have cared that she didn't have the grades that she lied about as she would have got the job anyway, but to lie and then be caught was stupid and they would have sacked her!

Tell the truth now and have a chat to the boss and say you wanted a chance (which you have been given and proved you can do the job) and now you have a real offer!

I am using it as an exmample of LYING!

They are both lies and can be sacked for them.

If you left and said you were made redundant that is a lie.

Can you not give the details of the last employer as the voluntary job?

Lying is not a good idea about the last employer as they will generally ask for a reference from your last employer.

Can you not get your references from elsewhere?

yeah ive got other references but i guess they'll check last employer as standard, i think im just gonna turn it down which is a shame
  • You need to check with your old employer what they will give as reason for leaving. It may be you resigned or be left blank. They wont be saying you left because you felt you were being bullied, thats for sure.
All you have to say to the new employer is that you left because you wanted to persue other interests or needed a change, and that the company was beginning the process of downsizing as well.
So you've sort of got it covered. As long as you were not sacked for theft or anything really bad I cant see it being that much of an issue.

How long ago did you start the voluntary job? If it was a while ago and there's a few staff your boss might have forgotton what you said altogether.

I'd take the advice above though and have a chat, explain that you were worried what they'd think of you but you really do want this position - worst thing that can happen is it's withdrawn, which is the same as you turning it down, best case scenario is you get the job =]
