Packard Bell laptop problem

I purchased a Packard Bell laptop just over 2 years ago and unfortunately I have just had to pay to have a new hard drive put in as the old one failed. I emailed Packard Bell to get some recovery discs as all of the pre-installed programs that came with the laptop such as Microsoft Office and photoshop elements are gone now and they were part of the reason I purchased this laptop. They told me I could have the discs for a £51 charge! They also made a point to tell me that my warranty had run out (which I hadn't mentioned when I emailed them). What I'm wondering is even though my warranty has run out do I have a case to get the discs for free as I am not able to use my laptop for the purposes I bought it for?

tidygirl7 you should have made your own recovery disks whe you bought the laptop, it would have cost you pennies.

there's no guarantee the recovery discs come with office, you could use open office and one of many free photo editors/managers.

you could mention sale of goods act to the retailer, saying your original hard disk didn't last a reasonable amount of time, and that is why you are in this predicament. http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/shopping/consumer-rights-refunds-exchange

backup in future, then you won't lose anything http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx

  • 2 years is reasonable, PB are a budget brand.

The hardware works, they're under no obligation to provide you with recovery software.

It has been the case for some time that laptops don't come with recovery media, but instead with the software preinstalled to allow you to create your own disks. Sadly, if you didn't, you only have yourself to blame, and PB are within their rights to charge over the odds to provide this service.

If it's not something you feel confident doing should you get a new laptop, Currys/PC World and PC specialised retailers are usually happy to do this for you for a small fee.

I too had a PB laptop that had hard drive failure- I had made the recovery discs, as instructed when laptop was new. I gave them to the laptop repairers who put in the new hard drive-they told me they were blank..no use whatsoever....
