When you are out you need to lift the handle and lock with the key to use the shoot bolts. If you have a UPVC door and just close it when you go out, anyone can put something through the letter box and knock the handle down and get in.
I have used a metal bucket handle that was in my side ally to get into my house when the door slammed shut on me.
If you dont shoot bolt a UPVC lock when out or in bed, Anyone CAN GET IN EASY. with out a sound.
On the inside you should have a thumb turn lock in case of a fire.
Get in the habit of shoot bolting the door as soon as you come in and as soon as you leave, if only for a couple of minutes.

I have all ways had an alarm and set it all the time when out and in bed.

The other thing is, dont leave your keys where someone could use a fishing rod and fish them through the letter box like on the hall table.
I think its best the leave your car keys on the bottom of the stairs, so if someone got in your house for you car keys, the first thing they will find before coming up the stairs is the keys. Hopefully they will just p off with your car and leave you alone.
