Problem with my printer.....

I have an old printer which is really basic but fits the bill. The ink cartridges are very cheap which is a huge bonus and I have a good stock of them. The problem is, it is playing up.
It is an Epson stylus C44UX model.
I have been seeking advice on the web about the problem. It seems that these printers are timed by the numbers of sheets printed to stop working. When you seek advice from Epson they advise you to have it serviced by them at a cost. I found that you can download a program called 'ssc epson utility program' which is supposed to get the printer working.
I am not very computer literate and not sure how to do this or if it will even work.
Can anyone give me any advice?

The SSC service utility should certainly do the job.
The reason it stops working is that each time you turn it on, load a cartridge, or run a purge a small amount of ink is pulled through the heads, down a little tube to a box at the bottom of the printer which is full of felt pads.
If you just reset the counter you will soon have ink all over the place.
DO THIS OUTSIDE ##### wear plastic gloves and disposable clothing. Disassemble (Google for instructions) the printer and remove the pads. Wash the felt with copious amounts of water.
##### THIS MAKES A HELL OF A MESS ---- do it outside and definitely not in the bath :whistle:0 -
Hi John,
I don't understand how to do the SSC service utility thing.
Did you mean I had to do that as well as cleaning the felt pads?
I threw my last printer away before realising I could overcome the problem. _I then sought out the same printer to buy. If I can, I would like to fix it. I downloaded the SSC but it did not download correctly, so I had to uninstall it. Why would that happen?Keep on trucking!0 -
Hi John,
I have managed to do the SSC thing, goodness knows how I did it!!!!!
Do I have to keep SSC utility on my computer, as it sends up some error messages when I log on? Will I need to do it again for the printer at some point or was it just needed the one time?
I will sort out cleaning the pads, I have seen a step by step guide on youtube. I better get my waterproofs on!Keep on trucking!0 -
Hi Sorry to come in on this thread. I was away for several weeks and now my printer is not printing properly. It will print but not the black I have tried cleaning the heads numerous times and despite this the nozzle check is showing that the black is still not printing. I don't know what to do now. Have replaced 2 of the inks and continuing to try and sort it out.
Now I am out of another colour of ink. I am reluctant to buy further ink just in case I have to abandon and buy a new printer. The printer is Epson SX410 3 in 1 printer and I have had it for around 2 -3 years. I bought it when I decided to replace the old one rather than have a big bill for a repair.
I have called the local Epson agent I would need to take a taxi as I dont drive. £12 round trip X 2 = £24 plus cost of repair and then buying new ink
Woould appreciate if anyone could give me some advice on this.
HELP and thanks for any advice you can give me.0 -
Hi
Did you manage to fix your problem? My Epson is doing the exact same thing. So annoying as I thought it was the black ink and have just spent £10 on replacing it.
Thanks0
