I got a great unexpected freebie today :D

My friend is not feeling great so I popped round on my way home from work to drop of some lemsip, paracetamol etc. anyway she had bought some extra lean diced casserole/ stewing steak intending to cook a stew for herself and the kids, but didn't feel like doing it so she was throwing it away  Because the use by date was today  I told her it would be fine tomorrow, but she said everything gets throw away on sell by date 'just in case'. I said to her why don't you freeze it, but she was adamant it was going in the bin, so I took it home and guess whats in the slow cooker:p

I just wondered if you have any none OS friends, who despite needing to watch the pennies just don't seem to help themselves.

Should say we are like chalk and cheese, but I love her to bits and told her I was going to shame her on MSE forum lol

Sometimes, I think I live with one. My OH checks use by dates on packaging religiously and questions whether we should be eating *anything*. To be fair to him, he does appear to have something of a delicate constitution when it comes to food - a lot more disagrees with him than me. I've taken to hiding packaging and serving stuff up before he can object!

My youngest DD has a large family and just before Christmas instead of buying a larger chicken for dinner, she could only find a smaller one (the larger one normally does them for two days dinners) the smaller one did them all for one day, but nowhere near enough to make another dinner for all of them. She said take the carcass home Mum or the dogs will get the scraps .(she knows me so well bless her )I brought it home and totally got every scrap of meat off The carcass then went into the pan with a chopped onion and some carrot and I made a stock from it which when cooled and skimmed was bagged up in the freezer for soup bases The meat I added to veg and a tin of tomatoes and a few lentils some herbs and curry powder and made four portions of chicken curry which were portioned up and put into the freezer.resul four dinners bases for me plus some stock to make soup with out of a carcass that would probably ended up in the bin .
Growing up with rationing and seeing my late Mum make something out of very little must have stuck in my psyche I think.DD was happy Mum had got four meals out of her left over clucker and I was more than happy to get four meals from it.Definitely my bargain of the week.In fact I had one of the curries last Thursday night with some rice and pitta bread and it was deliciouscost me about 50p if you include the rice and some pitta bread (yellow stickered from the freezer of course) Every time I cook anything I try to think of a way that i can streeetch it a bit so I can get a meal to eat then and there and a couple at least to freeze.Saves a fortune :):):)
  • Whenever my DD does a chicken she donates the carcass to me! When I know she is cooking one I get some broth mix on to soak and it's ready next day to boil up with the carcass when she drops it off! I strip the meat off the bones, drop it back in the pan with some chopped up veg and DH has enough big bowls of Chicken Broth for 3 lunches! Like you JackieO I was a child in the rationing years and remember watching my grandma make meals out of something and nothing as if it was yesterday! (Just a shame I can't remember what happened last week rofl!!!)

That is one freebie I do like. Friend of mine only uses the legs, breast meat and sometimes the wings and basically can't be bothered with all the fiddly bits of meat around the body of the chicken. I usually get more than enough meat out of it for another meal or two.

My mum used to eat meat but turned vegetarian about 15 years ago. Anyway, after a spell in hospital last year, she now sometimes eats chicken again but doesn't like the smell of it cooking so gets it from the hot meat counter at the supermarket.

Sometimes, it's cheaper to but a whole one rather than just the breasts & so she passes on the rest to me.

She also, every so often, will buy liver, bacon or ham because she remembers how much she used to enjoy them but then when she gets home, the thought of cooking or eating it makes her queasy so I have to go around to take them off her hands :D

Not groceries but I used to have several friends/relatives who bought their children loads of expensive clothes. Then the following year when they no longer fitted, used to pass them all on to me. :D

My friend will not use veg after their sell by date. Since when has veg been grown with a sell by? She even gave me tea that had run out. FGS tea used to take months to be shipped to the uk by clipper. A few weeks isnt going to matter. (BTW I used a tin of chopped toms that ran out in 2007 yesterday - we're doomed!)

My housemate tries to throw away anything past it's sell by date but slowly I'm teaching her. I don't really like what she eats or I'd let her carry on trying to throw it away and then eat it myself! I'm a strong believer in the sniff/mould/place in water tests rather than believing something printed by a machine hundreds of miles away that can't see what state the food's in now!

Got a free latte at Waitrose yesterday. Was very pleased as I never go there to shop (went yesterday due to cheese offer) and when I finally went I got a free latte for my troubles!

My OH has been on a roll lately with work. She received a solid gold snake statue from some sort of board meeting. Only a wee thing but worth a couple of hundred quid and is perfect as we are buying gold to save for DD in the future.

Also found out during OH's five month maternity leave that her work kept topping up her meal card (They are given 30 pound a month to spend in restaurants and shops in the office building) so we have 150 to spend which will get us a new food processor, some pricey bulk items such as flour and cooking oil, and also the New Year fripperies that we always seem to spend a fortune on (chocolate, nuts, fruit, wine etc...).

In addition to this her suppliers are starting to send the New Year gifts in, which is mostly lots of weird but allegedly expensive food that sits on top of the fridge for a year before being thrown out . A box of 30 Ferrero Roche and large selection of nuts did arrive home last night though, which was nice!
