New Mattress

Hello all.

Got my keys to my new apartment yesterday!!

Anyway, I need a good, quite firm (as I am hoping it will be seeing a lot of action) and cheap mattress.

Any ideas will be more than welcome. Actually, my description of what I'm looking for doesn't just apply to mattresses!!

Thanks

Dan

I ordered a mattress (which is getting delivered tomorrow) from Debenhams.

There is a 20% discount code and code for free delivery here

So even if their mattresses are slightly more expensive with the money off it might not be so bad.
    :hello:
  • Last month I bought a king size mattress from Ikea. Its quite a firm one and has a layer of memory foam built in, and was £140 which I dont think is a bad price for a king! Its called "SULTAN FORESTAD", but they have lots to choose from, many are cheaper! Took me a few days to get used to it, but now I sleep like a baby! (I can also recommend their Malm bed;) )

Only minus are, you need to measure your exsisting base/frame, as Ikeas sizes can differ to our 'english' sizes, and if you need them to deliver, it costs £35, but thats for lots of items and often they deliver the same day!!

If you are in Kent or London try http://www.bargainbedskent.co.uk/index.htm try Brett on the above website. If you mention that Vijay recommended you to him, he will give you extra discount. Thats what he said when I bought beds from him in the past! :D

    Try looking on ebay.

I know that many people are very wary about buying items like beds from ebay. However if you follow a few guidelines then you can save up to 75% on the shop prices:

    1) most important of all make sure that the seller gives a 100% satisfaction guarantee.

    2) check previous feedback for the seller, and even contact previous customers to ask them about the seller.

    3) use a company who display their phone number, so that you can talk to someone about your requirements (they want you to make the righ choice because it will cost them if you return it).

    4) check the sellers return policy. Many sellers charge for postage on returns.....can work out very expensive if you have unpacked a vacuum packed mattress, and you don't like it.

    5) try to use a seller who delivers using their own transport. Couriers often damage or misplace goods (believe me I know from experience).

Obviously you can't try before you buy, but for the saving it is worth the risk if you follow the guidelines above.

We looked for a new mattress recently - had no idea what to look for - but it needed to be firm and definitely no sweaty memory foam.
Went into a MFI store and tried a few, came to the conclusion that a "pocket sprung" was the way to go - these feel very firm and supportive but do not have a firm edge for when you're putting your socks on (if this is a priority).
We bought a Kingsize Rest Assured Saturn 1200 Pocket Sprung mattress for £250 from a local bed warehouse - delivered free the next day. It's great.
I think I could have saved a few bob by buying online but didn't bother on this occasion. The bed guy also gave us a number of a charity who came and collected the old mattress.

There are a couple of reasons that some people say that memory foam makes you too hot:

    1) some manufacturers use very deep layers of memory foam, and tell people that the deeper the foam the better. The truth is that the optimum thickness for memory foam is 2" to 2 1/2". Less than this and it won't be enough to contour to your body. If the foam is too deep, then you will sink into it, and it will wrap around you making you too hot.

2)mattresses with latex foam and memory foam don't allow air to circulate under the memory foam to remove the heat. This obviously isn't an issue with pocket sprung and memory foam mattresses. Memory foam does actually absorb heat from your body which then reacts with it to soften it. So as long as the heat can then disperse there is no problem.

Personally I find that I sweat less with my memory foam mattress than I did with my previous one.

Tim Deegan - the matress that was posted above at ikea is make from Polyurethane foam - the price looks good but i cant see any info on the depth of the memory foam. any advice? is polyurethane any good?

I have also see some places selling just the memory foam i.e. about 2inchs of memory foam that lays over your exisitng matress. The springs on my current one have gone so do you think it would be worthwhile just getting a totally new one or buy these memory foam layers to go on top of what i have?

    thanks for any advice.
