5year old with damaged glasses please help

Hiya my 5 year old has damaged glasses the arm fell off this morning i took them to the opticians to see if the could be fixed apparently not. This is her first pair of glasses and recieved on an optical voucher, she is only due for another sight test in my so does this mean i will have to pay for replacement glasses? or will they be covered by the nhs voucher. Many thanks for reading.

Where did you get them from?

I get mine from Specavers and if my son damages them, they fix or replace free of charge. You are entitled to one replacement per voucher period if I recall correctly. But we've certainly used it!

I'd change your optician if they try to charge you.

Have they said they're going to charge you?

When my son was little, he used to break his glasses a lot and they'd fix them for free. But I also know that he lost them once and they replaced them FOC. I know they are franchised so they may have different policies (but I don't think they would have?)

no they havent said they would charge i just didnt know if they would as they needed to be replaced. I wasnt sure they would only be allowed one free pair a year on the voucher.

Dont worry they will not charge.

The first thing the lady at opticians told me as i left with the first pair for my son "see you soon". I was there the next week and every week for a few months as my 3year old son learnt to take care of them.
  • Specsavers have even fixed my adult glasses for free, so should be no issue for kids.

Most opticians are fantastically obliging with repairs to kids' glasses - heck I've never been charged for fixing arms falling off my OWN glasses since it's usually just the screw falling out and needing replacing.

Boots Opticians will do any sort of small on the spot repairs for free if you bought the glasses there. Doesn't matter if the glasses are for a child or an adult. My OH is terribly hard on his glasses and goes in every couple of months or so for repairs. Also when my DS got his glasses I was told that they're replace them if badly damaged. There was no mention of only doing this once per voucher.

You shouldn't pay for ANY repair on childrens glasses.

If a new test is due May it may be worth just doing it early and getting new specs with the new prescription.

I don't know about England but in Scotland we are not allowed to test any earlier than 28 days before the recall date unless there are significant problems, if its a hospital issued prescription we are not allowed to test at all until we receive a discharge letter.

Kids repairs are free, if the local health board thinks the family are abusing the voucher scheme they will step in on their own accord and bill the value of the vouchers they don't agree with in a letter to your house, this happens when people go to different opticians/lose several pairs in the space of months etc. You won't be billed for a 5 year old breaking the legs off of her glasses for the first time.
