From the posts I gather that this meter mix-up has been identified purely from the Numbers on the meters, and the one on the Bills

As already posted meter confusion in blocks of flats is not uncommon, and as a Belt & Braces measure it's worth doing a physical consumption check on the meter

Turn off everything in the flat and look the meter you think is yours, which should have stopped completely.
Then plug in just a ketttle and have your flatmate switch it On & Off whilst you watch the meter - The meter should show bursts of use that are in synch. with the kettle switching

Did it Dogshome, its definitely our meter. When everything was off there was a red light on meter as well.

Have another good thing I've heard today though...
Apparently wrong meter number should not really affect our bills.
Do people even listen to what they say?
So whats the point in meters really?
I always thought that they reflect usage of energy, so I am either being blond, or they just simply try to sweep it under the carpet.

Called British Gas and our meter number was indeed wrong even back then. To make everything even more confused-
We are no8, and we pay for no3.
No 3' meter is registered as no 4 (british gas),
Flat number 4 was empty for 2 years.
  • I found by contacting EDF complaints department was more productive than the normal phone number. I have had an ongoing problem with them, saying i was spending £46 a week on gas,in a small 2 bed flat with 5 rads on 5 hours a day!! I received a bill for £938 that went up to £1408, they were indeed reading the wrong meter, but I had to prove it!! It was only when I asked for an ofmet(?) meter check that they got the a****s into gear, now turns out they owe me £757!! don't give up its time consuming and so stressful!!

To a degree, this is correct.
People in the same block of identical flats, living similar lives will have electricity/gas bills that very closely match.

If the other flat is a family of 4, who likes their heating at 28C all day, and you're a single person that's happy with 18C and is out most of the day - then clearly they will differ lots more.
  • Just to clarify, have you lived in the flat since it was built? If so, surely the meters would have started somewhere not a million miles from zero, and the reading you have on YOUR meter now would be the total of electric used since then. At least it would be a start on determining how much you should have paid/have overpaid to date.

Once EDF have done their checks and recognised the meter mix-up, the usual procedure is to take a reading from what is 'your' meter, followed by further readings over a period - Usually 3 months

Then based on the useage they have on these readings, they take an educated guess as to what your Annual consumption is, and then re-issue all your past bills based on that assumed consumption.

Whilst this is OK for EDF as they have resolved what they see as a problem.that must be attended to, it's perhaps not so good for you.
3 months use, particularly in Winter is not a sufficent base on which to judge 12 months consumption.

When it gets to the re-issued bill stage, WRITE to Eon advising them that whilst you accept the bills, it is only on condition that after 12 months when you meter has recorded a 'true' years use, that the estimated billing will be re-visited and adjusted in line with the 'true' 12 month figures from your meter
It is important that you get acceptance of this condition in WRITING

It may be that you choose to be particularly carefull with your use over these 12 months, but then that is your choice

MrsChaucer, no, we have not lived here since it was built, we've been here almost 3.5 years. Switched to EDF 2 years ago.

Difference between meters is quite big, We started on 22609 and its on 37900s, while Flat number 3 is over 50000.
There is a large romanian family living there and they are in almost all day.

Maybe this is my blonde moment, but cant you just find the initial meter reading you had when you moved in. then compare with the final with BG to make sure that amount is correct. Then compare end of BG with todays reading ?
    Nice to save.
