So when people say cyclists aren't allowed to ride more than 2 abreast, they're actually wrong? Cyclists are just advised not to ride more than 2 abreast.

    This is correct.

What law would you suggest is being broken?

I'm not suggesting any, it's just that people tend to reference this part of the highway code so now it's cleared up in my mind.
  • The roads are pretty scary! But then that's why I don't ride a bike. I suppose if I had made the decision to ride a bike, I'd have to get used to the fact that bikes should be on the road, not on the pavement.

In Brighton, where I live, the cycle lanes are sometimes on the pavement as well as the road, but when on the pavement there's still a lane for pedestrians.
  • The introduction of the fixed penalty is not aimed at responsible cyclists who sometimes feel obliged to use the pavement out of fear of traffic and who show consideration to other pavement users when doing so.

At last, some intelligently written law.

Personally, I'd never ride in the road if I could help it. There are no cycle paths where I live and the road is incredibly narrow. I don't really fancy jostling with a lorry on my little mountain bike.

I tend not to move myself or my on-lead dog out of the way of cyclists on the grounds that pavements are for pedestrians. Cyclists are not pedestrians.
    Dogs are not pedestrians.:)

(I'm talking specifically about pavements here, not trails or tracks.)

Sooner or later you or you dog will get injured, the cyclist will ride off with no lights. The police won't be interested

I thought the main reason for men riding on the path was because of all the women drivers ;)

Honestly though, the best place to cycle is 3 feet out from the kerb. Vehicles cannot skim past you as they actively have to overtake you. It is also what they teach you as part of cycling proficiency.

3 feet out is right. As a very experienced rider myself it is also my advice. Position yourself in the gutter, sooner or later you will get swiped. Position yourself properly, drivers HAVE to overtake properly and give you room.

That is how CYCLISTS ride. The rest are just BOBS ( Blokes On Bikes).
This thread really shows up the woefully poor training/experience of both drivers and bicycle riders.
