Address on driving license

I've moved to new place. Do I need to get a new license issued to reflect my new address. We do produce license as proof of address many times.

You are legally obliged to inform DVLA of change of address, failure to do so can result in a fine of up to £1000.00 ?

Yes and it takes a few minutes. You do it online, its free (unless you have a very very old one). They send you the new one, you cut up your current one and send it off.

If your car is registered in your own name (ie not a company/lease car) you'll also have to update your address on the vehicle registration document. Updating your driving licence does not do this automatically, and apart from being an offence in its own right, having the vehicle registered to the wrong address could cause you a lot of headaches if/when you get a speeding/parking ticket, the documentation goes to the wrong address.

I updated my licence recently as a result of a change of address and despite what many say about DVLA it was pain free and quick and I'd never had a photo licence before either.

How about address on my passport. Do I need to get that changes as well. Surely people keep moving houses all the time. I dont expect to get a new passport issued all the time.

That is true, but unfortunately it is the law that the licence must be updated and sent to your new address every single time.

If you prefer to do it the old fashioned way - and let's face it, house moves invariably have their associated lack of broadband periods - you can simply write your new address in the pink and white boxes on the bottom of your counterpart and send it with your photocard to the address written on it. Nice, simple and free.

Given the passport question too.... don't forget to:

1. Update the DVLA with the new address for your cars/registered keeper
2. Let your insurance company know you've moved

The above is assuming you have a car and not just a license for driving a company car or something.
