£9000 quote for skimming/laying of cushion flooring re kitchen floor

Options
I'm worried my parents are being taken advantage off. They have large stone (?) tiles with fairly large grouting margins that make up their kitchen floor at the moment. They want much softer flooring instead. Because of the existing tiles it is necessary to skim the floor. It will be two days work. It's a fairly large surface area and an awkward 'U' shape. The quote came from someone who is listed on a website that checks out traders. When they told me the quote was £9000 I was aghast - but they are going ahead with it. If someone can put my mind at rest, that this quote is reasonable I will have to accept that I'm the one who's out of touch with what things cost these days!

To help you might need to provide a bit more info. Is the quote for labour, or does it include the self leveller\cushion floor? where abouts are they located? and crucially whats the area of the floor?

The process will basically involve cleaning the floor, then pouring\spreading self leveller and leaving to dry, and then fitting the new flooring.

tpt is right. Its absolutely off the scale. You need to get them to stop and get some other quotes in.

  • Thanks for your replies. I totally agree with the quote being off the scale. I have already let my parents know my opinion and am hoping that your opinions will enable them to see that it's not just me that thinks it's over the top. The square footage is 875 and the quote is for the whole job from levelling to top quality cushion flooring. I've spoken to Dad this afternoon and he says they are querying the quote with the company because they 'think it's a bit high' .

Thats a larger area than i was expecting, roughly 80m2, which is a very very large kitchen\diner. This makes the quote roughly £125m2 which sounds a lot but is possible depending on the type of flooring chosen
  • as tpt is asking are you sure thats the correct m2 that is a huge floor area for a kitchen/diner
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.
  • Hi - I'm going to call on my parents today armed with a tape measure and check the square footage out for myself. Hopefully I'll be able to look at the actual quote as well.
  • Sorry for bothering you about all this. My Dad has just 'phoned. He's had another look at the written quote which arrived in the post yesterday - and it's not £9000 at all - it's £900.... He swears the man said £9000 when he was there and now thinks he must have been 'just joking'. It still worries me that they believed £9000 to be an acceptable quote just 'a bit on the high side'. Thanks for all your input.

Great news. Now he needs to get another quote to compare.

I know what you mean - a big relief in one way but very worrying that they were prepared to overpay to the tune of £8k. There are too many people in the world who will take advantage of older or trusting people.

It's a sensitive area to tackle too - hard to suggest to your parents that they might not be competent making financial decisions any more.
