My sons xbox360 has an system error message and we have been in touch with xbox support who were no help and just said that we would have to send it to them for repair and it would cost about £180. Does anyone know if it is worth it or would it be better to just go and buy the core system and put his hard drive on? I am so hopeless at these things I would like a bit of help if anyone can. Thanks

Assuming its not under warranty? Where did you buy the original console from?[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]"The internet is a great way to get on the net."

I would guess 3 of the 4 green lights are red and flashing round the power button.
It is happening to a lot of xbox 360's search for ring of death a £280 item should last longer than 17 months that is taking in that you bought it on release back in November 2005 return the item to the shop you bought it from as inherently faulty and not sutable for the purpose it was bought for. The fault is down to failed solder joints on the system board, you can use "the towel trick" to revive a failed console. wrap the console in towels blocking the vents etc then turn it on for 10-20 minutes then let it cool and remove the towels and try the console it has been known to give long use times but others short use others it hasnt made a bit of difference. what do you have to loose?
Microsoft should replace your console for you if it is within warrenty but if not they charge £80 and send you a reconditioned xbox back. i would avoid sending it to microsoft and go to your supplier your contract is with them not microsoft so it is up to them to provide you with a serviceable unit.0 -
You already made a mistake by buying the 360.
Go buy a real system - PS3.0 -
Thanks for the replies - In response to the lights flashing - the green light is on and one red light is flashing. The error message is 'system error E74''. I have enquired at microsoft support and they say that it is an internal problem, but that the hard drive should be fine. As I bought the console in Jan 06 it is not under warranty so they say it will cost about £125 to repair. I have since been and bought a core system and my son has put his hard drive on and it is working fine. Still it has cost £199. As he has used this console every day since getting it the PS3, not a patch on 360, is just standing like an ornament. Thanks for all the advice.0

Xbox 360 error code is listed as E74: AV cable error... There is a problem with the AV cable, have you tried using a different AV cable?. If the cable is known to be working then there is a 90% chance it's a scaler chip problem (the "ANA" or "HANA" chip connected directly to the AV cable) in rare cases it is the GraphicsProcessingUnit. We all die. Go buy a real system - PS3.
Back on the real point - seems like its not the fault most people are having so you may end up having to pay the price
Hoping this doesnt happen to me mind...[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]"The internet is a great way to get on the net."

Sales of Goods act 1979, take the faulty 360 back to where you could it and ask them how much it is to fix it as 17 months or whateven is not reason after all stuff like that should last for 5 year or more. If its like £50 or so get it fix and then he could sell the Faulty-but repaired on on ebay or something.0

Thanks for that bit of advice. I will take it back to the shop next week and see what happens. In the meantime I have bought him a new 360 and he has put his hard drive on, so at least he has one to play. I will let you know the result.0
