Travelling in EU - passport needed?

My passport runs out on the 11 of May, but I don't want to renew it until September when I change to my married name. Is it possible to travel to France with just my driving license? We were hoping to go across to go camping for a week or so sometime this July.

Assuming you are a citizen of the UK then you need a passport to go to any country except Ireland.0

A friend was allowed to fly to Spain even though his passport had expired. Airline said he was lucky it was Spain because they accepted an expired passport as proving entitlement to live in the EU!
But I would be very careful.0 -
Absolutely no way ... you need a passport!!!0

Nope, you need a passport that still has a validity of six months on it.0

For the EU you just need a passport that is currently valid - it doens't have to have 6 months life left in it.0

Fair enough - it will have to wait until next year!0

No, you need a passport. You could get it now in you maiden name & have it ammended.
You can apply for a new passport in the new name in advance of the marriage, although it is only usable from the marriage date

I would have to pay AGAIN for the replacement passport though and I simply can't afford that. I am applying for the postdated passport, but as you said it won't be valid until the wedding date. As I said, France will have to wait - looks like its going to be Pembrokeshire again :rotfl:0

It all depends on the country you are travelling to. Go to the french government website and search for passport visa requirements, if in doubt send mail to French embassy in Britain.
I was travelling to Switzerland (Geneva, which also has a French exit) and was told, as long as my passport is not more than 12 months over expiry date there will be no problem. But double check if that applys to French law as well.
Hope this helps.0
