atos and DLA

Options
just wanted to clear something, does atos carry out a second medical for DLA to PIP changeover after they assess you for ESA?
and does the info you put in ESA50 get taken into account for PIP assessment?
Also to qualify for the support group of ESA you HAVE to get 15 points in one of the descriptors or nothing so if you get 6 in one and 9 in another they dont add it up to 15 to qualify for support group,is that correct?
thanks in advance!

  • Some people do need to have a medical with ATOS currently for DLA - which technically has nothing to do with ESA.
ESA was the replacement for Income Support/Incapacity benefit and is still migrating claimants over from one to the other and this is an ongoing process. Majority of claimants from these seem to be facing Medicals with ATOS and many are failing as they do not understand the difference between the 2 benefits.
As regards DLA 2 PIP - most people who were awarded DLA indefinitely will be re assessed for PIP after OCT 2015 at the earliest. It is only those whose DLA awards stop prior to that or who have a change in disability and also new claimants that will go onto PIP prior to this. SO far as I know anyway. I myself am expecting to transfer early 2015 as that is when my DLA ends. And yes I expect to face another ATOS medical at that point. It will also be the year that my ESA ends too. Another medical? However the illness I have is incurable and even though some people get a remission, I do not know if I will so lucky. At present it looks like I will not be. So for the moment my OH is at home helping me cope with my illness. He may in time if I get worse have to be my carer - I just do not know.

horseunderwater sorry but what does OH stand for?
  • Other half in my case husband.
  • From what I have read, those receiving DLA will be written to and 'invited' to apply for PIP.

There is a different set of descriptors for PIP and different levels of award. There are approximately 3.2m people receiving DLA - will everyone be eligible for PIP?

I understood that points for the ESA WCA could be added together ie to make 15 - may be wrong (?)
    I have climbed the mountain . . . . .

They do add up the points, and as long as you get 15 points or more you go in the WRAG.

It doesn't matter how many points you get, it won't put you in the support group, as that doesn't go on points, it is an additional test.

To get in the support group you have to meet at least of the support group descriptors:

many people will NOT get PIP

if you read the budget document that first spoke of PIP its being brought in to cut the dla/pip bill by 20%

many people under pip for example will not get the old lower rate dla care for making a meal as microwaves will be ok

cant carry a pan ? well under pip use a small one or ladel the contents out bit by bit and dont lift
