I went to tax my car on thursday, only to discover I had once again misplaced my insurance documents (I did this last year, I never learn!) I had no choice but to do it online.
Postie hasnt been here yet, but if the tax disc doesnt arrive this morning what is my legal position for driving the car? I know years ago they were leanient if you forgot to display a new disc at the start of the month, but will they do the same if its been paid for and in the post?
Thanks
Jane

Not displaying a valid tax disc is an offence. It doesn't matter whether it's in the post, at home or otherwise.
If you do get stopped and it can be confirmed you've paid for a valid tax disc, you *MAY* avoid being prosecuted.
Personally, I think tax discs should be done away with, but unless they are, you are still risking being prosecuted by having the vehicle on a public road.0 -
Each time that I have taxed online it has arrived two days later. You could be fined for not displaying a current tax disc but it is unlikely that you would get caught. I prefer doing it online, easy, less hassle with no queues in the Post Office. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

Thanks guys. Im annoyed with myself really for misplacing the insurance. Ive since found the certificate but obviously Id already paid online so it was too late.
Still no post here, looks like Ill have to chance the school run and pray it comes in the morning. I dont need the added stress lol0 -
If spottied, the police fill in a report form (CLE 2/6 I think) which gets forwarded to the DVLA. I am told that in virtually all cases where it had been bought but not displayed they just bin the form.0

To address the root cause of this problem, keep all your car documents (registration, insurance, and garage receipts/MoT certificates, etc.) together in one of those A4 document wallets. And yes, I am an over-organised, anally-retentive sad b*st*rd.

My husband is equally anally retentive and bloody organised, everything is in a little document box, alphabetised and categorised. Unfortunately the ruddy insurance form has been removed by person or persons unkown (ok, yes, probably me!) and I have returned the document to a much safer place. So damn safe I couldnt find it
And wouldnt you know, it still hasnt come  Hopefully it will be here when I get home tomorrow evening. If not I have decided to just sit and cry for a while.
BTW, the link had tears streaming down my cheeks. I always wondered the secret of UFO's...little did I know it had been in front of me all this time!!0
