Worcester 24cdi combi boiler using lots of gas

My boiler is using lots of gas and I need to find out if the boiler needs replacing or if there is an issue with the gas meter.

If I have the heating on dial 2 (temp 1 to 4) and use it for 15 minutes it uses 22 cubic feet (imperial) which equates to £0.25p. The average units per day used is 2.275 which is 71.70 KWH per day which costs £2.58. (past 69 days)

The water is on dial 3 and a shower uses an average of 12 cubic feet which equates to £0.14p. Does this sound normal or excessive for this model which was installed early 2002. I only moved into the property a few months ago.

The pressure is on 8 and it will not repressurise, You can hear the water running into it but the gauge never changes and the key just keeps turning, it never locks.

Any advise will be great as I cant have another £200 gas bill for 69 days use!

  • Is this your owned home or rented? If the latter the Landlord should be contacted and told that the boiler may need some new parts or at the very least a jolly good service from a gas safe engineer.(CORGI as was). Until that is done and boiler is working as it should it will possibly be impossible to know. I have a baxi boiler which was installed in 02 as well, but it has had some new parts and is now working as it should. These included a new fan for the exhaust flue and a new pressure switch last year. I have since had it powder flushed as well and the iron oxide gunk that came out of it and the rad's has made the house so hot now that we have to turn it down to setting 1 now for most of the time. However my daily average for past couple of months since 15th Nov is around £5.52 /day. This includes water and CH as well as using a gas hob twice per day. But I am ill and at home so need heat on longer time period - 17 hours per day. Roughly £0.32.4 p/hour.

WB 24 is a 24Kwh boiler (I believe from memory)

So this means at full power it will use 24Kw of gas in one hour.

    So 15 mins would be 24/4 = 6Kwh

Gas is about 4.5p to 5p per hour so 25p for 15 mins is spot on.

You don't say the size of your property and how long you have the heating on for each day, but a £200 gas bill for 69 days in winter is not high.

The average UK consumption is 16,500kWh a year of which 70%+ is normally used in winter. So under 5,000kWh in 10 weeks(69 days) doesn't seem excessive.

You don't need the boiler replacing, but you need the presurisation issue sorting out. There could be a leak on the CH circuit, a sticking PRV (check outside from the overflow) or a failed EV. Get in an independent local GSR RGI who knows WB's.
Or if it's in warranty, call WB.
