Energy Switch Rejected - Help Please
Hi MSE Supremos,
We've recently moved into a new house which has different gas and electric companies supplying it.
We tried switching to a new, third, supplier for both upon moving in but couldn't because we hadn't received our first bills.
We tried a second time after receiving and paying our first named bills but were rejected as the new supplier thinks we're on pre-pay meters. We're not.
Where do we go from here?
Rgds, Jase.

Call the new supplier and ask them how to prove you are not on pre-paid? Try a different supplier? You can always switch again after another 6 weeks, if you don't go for a fixed deal.0

Have you ever been on PPM's at all anywhere you have lived? If not there should be no reason why they would think you are. Unless of course they have prev supplied this property and it was on PPM's when they did so?
What tariff are you on with the current supplier - check and find out by looking at the recent bill. Could they offer you a better deal?0 -
Have you actually registered for an account with the existing supplier (and supplied opening readings), with whom you are in a deemed contract from the day you moved in? Any attempt to switch away from them will be blocked unless you already have an account to switch from.
It's nothing to do with 'receiving first bills'. They can't bill you accurately until you tell them that you have moved in.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Thanks for your replies zerog, Horseunderwater & macman.
The problem has been established to be an error with the electricity meter record somewhere in the chain. I.e. it's recorded as pre-pay when it is actually E7 credit. Gas appears okay.
Zerog, the new supplier suggested I contact my current electricity supplier and get the error corrected. I did this but our current electricity supplier said there were no errors and we confirmed the serial number to be correct.
Horseunderwater, we've never been on pre-pay and and neither do I think anyone previously has in this property as the meters have dates from when the house was built. I'm on the cheapest tarriff with my current electricity supplier but it is still ~5p/unit dearer than the new supplier.
macman, yes we have contracts (not fixed term) for gas and electric with two different suppliers and have paid the original occupier bills and our first named quarterly bills.
I'm now stuck as what to do next. I've contacted the new supplier again and depending who I speak to get different answers. On the last call I was promised a confirmation email but it has not arrived.
Yours, stuck on an expensive electricity tariff, Jason.0 -
Make written complaints to both your existing and new suppliers. If the matter is not resolved then take the complaint to ofgem (this is what I did when I had a similar problem. Both suppliers quickly came to a resolution once ofgem involved).I work within the voluntary sector, supporting vulnerable people to rebuild their lives.
I love my job0
