Can't hear microphone recordings

I have a laptop which has a built in microphone and speakers. The speaker volume is very low to start with, even at 100% it is only a tenth of the volume of the one I'm using now.
Also when I use the built in microphone to record anything, there is no sound during playback.
I have downloaded and installed the latest drivers and that hasn't made a difference.
I've checked in the control panel and everything is up at 100%.
Is there anything else I can try? Would buying external speakers and mic make a difference?

Birthdays are good for you. Statistics show that the people who have the most live the longest.
