Small Family Car Option?

meggles Posts: 196 Forumite
I am facing redundancy, and so will need to buy a car for the first time ever (at 33!) (1st car was bought off sister, have had company cars since then....)

I've trolled through which.com/car, but I think I'm getting a bit overwhelmed with choice. Any guidance or suggestions would be most appreciated...

We have a year old, and I often transport another child, so safety is high on my priorities. Other priorities:

Requirements:
Large Car or small MPV/SUV
Very good fuel economy (at least for its class)
Low running costs
Must be Automatic
Used, up to 5 years old
Would really like to spend <£8000, but could go up to £10k

Cars I've looked at are Seat Alta, Hyundai Ix20, Citroen C3 Picasso, Peugeot 3008.

Every time I look at autotrader and/or which I just keep going in circles....

Thanks guys. I should say, I obviously don't want to spend £8k if I can find something suitable lower. Also, I am starting a new job in March, so won't be redundant for long.

First check the insurance situation as you will have no NCB!

Previously I have managed to work around this by getting some partial credit by driving a company car without any accidents.

That said I usually do my insurance through brokers and they sorted all this out.

I'd also go along with forgotmyname and say there is plenty cheaper that would enable you to hold onto your money in case the new job doesn't come off....or doesn't work out
