Looking at Six Flags theme park - anybody been?
    Which one?
Six Flags is a chain brand, they have 17 parks in 9 different states of the USA, including 1 in Chicago, 1 in St Loius and 3 in California, plus one each in Canada and Mexico.

We've been to Six Flags Magic Mountain, north of LA.
For anyone into extreme coasters it's great, not much there for anyone less keen.
Everything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the end

Thanks for the tips, we will be going from Vegas to San Francisco and then driving down to San Diego and have a house booked in Palm Springs so that covers a lot of what's been recommended. I know we'll have to pay a premium for dropping off in another city and I know some people wonder why on earth we want to do this, but it is something we'll enjoy and fortunately not everyone's alike or the world would be a very dull place. Looking at Six Flags theme park - anybody been?

So is that driving down the Big Sur? That is exactly what we did last August. Picked up the car in San Francisco airport, drove down the Big Sur staying in Monterey and Santa Monica on the way down. A night in Hollywood and then down to San Diego for three nights. I am not sure you will pay that much extra for the one way drop. We ended up dropping the car at Pheonix airport and I am not even sure we payed a one way charge. Then again after hiring cars in Western Australia and paying their one way fees anything else seems small in comparison. Make sure you see the Panda cub in San Diego Zoo!

If you read the original post you will find the Op is picking up the car in Chicago and dropping off in LA

So the one way fee will be quite high

Six Flags at St. Louis is a good park and on your route, you could also go the the Gateway arch when you are there and on your way out of the city, drop by Meremac Caverns and be amazed by the underground rock formations.

As others have said, the original route 66 is not up to much, mostly tourist stops and not cheap ones at that. I have criss-crossed the route and travelled along it as part of my travels across the states and even stayed in motels directly on the route itself a few times but would not say it was any kind of highlight for me. (been there, got the fridge magnet :))

saving a small fortune on one way hire charges

In short, National have a $250 limit on one way hire charges (although with additional taxes, it ends up over $300)

many car hire companies have no one-way fee between CA and AZ.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

Then again we did get hit with a hefty fee for dropping it off at Pheonix airport! The authorties there charge a high tax for car hire at the airport. Unfortunatly I only found that out the night before dropping it off.

    I agree with this post.

If you've not done an American road trip before then Route 66 is not a good starter.

It's overhyped and quite dull. There are better routes.

haha! I'll tell my dad this, he wants to take his Harley and ride Route 66 in 2015 when he gets his pension! :rotfl:

I've told him he should go to Oz instead and visit the family.

And he could ride Adelaide to Darwin which is a great ride, passing Ayres Rock on the way! or he could ride the Nullarbor plain. Some great routes for a bike in Australia. Great Ocean Road another excellent ride.
