Puncture from petrol garage forecourt... Advice?

Hi all, just a little advice needed if possible. My partner and I bought a new car yesterday and trying to be responsible car owners we took it to a garage to check the tyre pressure. In pulling up to the air pressure machine we have sustained a puncture as the floor was covered in large chunks of very thick glass. As we have just shelled out all out savings for the car in the first place we can't really afford a new tyre at the moment. Are the garage liable at all?

Advice much appreciated :-)

Why did you drive over the large chunks of very thick glass instead of going round them?

I would say the garage are not liable for you deciding to drive over very obvious chunks of glass. No doubt you could get a lawyer who would be able to win you a case if you brought it but the costs would be far more expensive than a puncture repair or replacement tyre.

The lesson here, which I can't actually believe I'm having to point out, is don't drive over large chunks of very thick glass.

Just because glass was on the floor doesn't mean that this caused the puncture. You could have run over anything on your journey to the petrol station.

You need to prove it was the glass and that may be almost impossible.
Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.
  • You would have seen these very large chunks of glass , if not before at least when you got out of the car to check the pressures as was your intent. Did you report the alleged event to the petrol station manager at the time ?

Most types of glass will be crushed to powder by a tyre.
I love these posts where OP thinks someone (anyone) else should pay for their own carelessness.

I was about to add something similar to my post but decided not to as it was the OP's first post so gave them the benefit of the doubt (for now)

I used to have a signature saying 'why is it always somebody elses fault' but some people, usually the ones who akways wanted to blame others, when they were clearly to blame' took it all too personally to them.

    But it's a fact......

  • Well first off, thanks for keeping the cynicism at bay all! It was a genuine request for advice from a new driver. Firstly the glass seemed to be huge, not from a bottle or anything normally associated with a puncture, and secondly I would hardly drive over it purposefully. It was actually during darkness and the area wasn't well lit at all. We didn't notice the glass until we had reversed over it. We have so vw found out that two other cars had the same experience on the same day so the garage were aware if the problem. Anyway, thanks for the advice, the problem has since been dealt with.

Enjoy the new car but look at where you are driving in future.

If you spent all your savings on the car to the extent that you can't afford a new tyre..... you bought a car that was too expensive.
