Life assurance question

Hi,
I have been looking to take out life assurance for a little while now, how much access do the insurance company have to medical records/history etc?
The reason I ask is that I have just been discovered, through an ultrasound scan investigating something else, that I have a small hole in my heart which has been there since birth apparantly (I am now 30), and although I have been told it wont cause me any health issues how would it affect my assurance premium? would I even need to declare this sort of thing?
Anyway hope someone can help,
Regards,
Steve.

You'd certainly need to declare it, whether it would affect the premium depends on the Doctor's reports and medical underwriters assessment of these. If you don't disclose the information your policy will be invalid, even if you died from something totally unrelated.I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a Mortgage Adviser, so you need to take my word for it.This signature is here as I follow MSE's Mortgage Adviser code of conduct. Ok, thanks a lot - yeah I was planning on being honest about it all as I had heard of policies not paying out ( And wife has expensive tastes

Yes, i would phone the company and declare it. It will need reunderwriting. They may rate you because if this. Should there be a claim there would be a good chance they will not pay out as you had the condition since birth. I'm a IFA for 20 years and deal't with death and other claims for years.0
