I have Norton antivirus ware installed on my new xp upgrade. I keep getting pop ups that tell me my computer may be infected and to go to https://www.spwlc.com where I'm urged to purchase more antivirus ware. The popups 'appear' to come from microsoft - anybody else get them?

They sound like popup ads, not something detected by Norton AV.
You could try installing the Google Toolbar to prevent popups like these, and make sure you have Spyware detection software installed - this link has details.0
