in Credit cards
hey i hope this is the correct section to post this question
i went travelling for a year, and i used a "travelex cash passport". this is basically a card, that i load with money from my account ( in english pounds) and then i can withdraw money in any currency anywhere in the world.
the situation....
i loaded £2000 onto my card. it went through ok.
a few days later, travelex, by mistake, duplicated that deposit, and so added another £2000 to the card. but this extra deposit was not deducted from my bank account.
not realising, i continued using the card, and obviously spent this extra money
over a year later, travelex contact me and say they have noticed theyre mistake, and i need to pay back the £2000.
am i legally required to pay this back to them? as it was theyre mistake for duplicating the deposit?
thanks for any advice

You spent £2000 of their money. Ofcourse you need to pay it back. I also doubt you didn't realise an extra £2000 was deposited...0 -
You spent money which didn't belong to you - so yes, you do need to pay them back.
Whilst you may have not noticed a small extra credit to your card, your claim not to have noticed an extra £2000 (double what you put on the card), AND to have spent it unwittingly, is not remotely credible.
However, the first mistake was theirs, and so you when you are agreeing to repay them, they should be willing to accept a reasonable repayment plan - say £400/month for five months, rather than one lump sum.0 -
Yep, everyone's right. Money paid by accident to you is not yours to spend, especially as you noticed it. This happens in lots of areas, e.g. HMRC claiming back underpayment in tax etc
Unfortunately you have to pay it back, negotiate a payment plan as suggested0
