Nokia Lumia Phone - Do I really have to use Zune?

Have just started playing with new Nokia Lumia 610 phone. Have only bought it for basic functions (you know, like talking to people, and occasionally using those texty things). I will also be using the camera. However, I have no need to use it as a media/music player (a la iPod).
What I would like to know is: is there a simple way of getting photos off the phone without loading Zune onto my PC? If not, can Zune be configured in a sort of "lite" mode where it doesn't take up lots of resources scanning and building libraries etc? Ideally, I'd like the phone to appear as a removable drive (like various cameras I've used) so that you can simply copy your photos with drag and drop. But, I suspect that's me being a little naive and I'll have to clog my PC up with another heavy weight application.

Never let it get you down... unless it really is as bad as it seems.

I would have thought that much like the iPhone appears in My Computer to allow you to copy photos from it as if it were a digital camera (even though other media transfers require iTunes) that Windows Phone 7.5 devices would do this too. However, I have just recently sold my Lumia 710 so I can't say for certain now, but you can easily install Zune to see if that does kick start it into action. BTW, Zune is/was actually a pretty good media player with a very nice interface. I think it's rather a shame that Microsoft shelved it. You might find you like it once you've installed it!0
