Holidays ideas with a 11yr old

I live alone with my 11yr old son.
Woudl like to take him on some long different holidays this year (not a typical med holiday) for up to 2 weeks.

preferably something that gives a mixtures of culture, local sights etc. I was thinking of Intrepid holidays but their prices seem to have shot up since i went on a trip with them 6 years ago.

Can anyone recommend a similar type of company that has family tours/trips in countries such as India, Thailand etc.

Also welcome any ideas that are easy to travel and plan with a 11yr old. A holiday/destination is that does not take hours of planning.

Have you tried picking up a copy of Wanderlust magazine, or go to their website or sister site/forum 'GoWonder'. This will give you years worth of ideas, plus they have a directory of specialist travel companies - try their tripfinder tool which tells which companies go where.

Personally I would recommend Iceland as a destination with an 11yr old - vikings, volcanoes, whale watching, glaciers, geysers, waterfalls etc etc. Not sure where you live, but it's easy to do Iceland independently with easyJet flights, hiring a car and staying in B&Bs or farmhouses. It's not as expensive as it used to be, OK Reykjavik is London prices expensive (but worth a couple of days of your time), but once you're out exploring in country, it's no more expensive than rest of UK!
