Adopted a 10 yr old cat and younger cat having issues

Hi guys,
I adopted a 10yr old cat after her owner passed away as I knew it would be harder to rehome an older cat, so I thought she may as well live the rest of her life with me, so I have 9yr old and 1yr old cat already.

Now, the younger old is being a right moody sausage, she hissing and groweling at the 9yr old who she's always known and the new cat(that I expected!) and me! The new cat has settled in fantastically she's just adorable, how can I make this easier for them all ?
Helpful advice gratefully appreciated
Thanks

  • Awwww that's so nice to hear that you've taken an older cat on.

How did you introduce them? Did you keep them apart and gradually introduce them?

I think that cats have a pecking order and that when you lose one or a new one arrives it takes them a while to figure out the new dynamic. We just lost an ancient cat 3 weeks ago and I cannot tell you how much drama there has been ever since! My remaining two (who used to get on quite well) are now constantly at each other's throats and are even fighting full on.

Ugh - totally sympathise. Cats can be so hard to fathom at times!

I took in two new adult cats introducing them to my two five+ year olds who'd been here since they were each a kitten. My advice.... don't expect miracles. The cats will take their time to sort out who is The Boss between them. It might take days, weeks, or even months. You can't force cats to do anything, and that includes forcing them to get along instantly. Patience is required, don't give up on them becoming friends even a month or two down the line. (But then again they might surprise you and decide they are siamese twins tomorrow and refuse to be parted... they are cats after all and they are in charge!)
