    Shop around and you'll find interest rates closer to inflation. Take advantage of regular saver offers (pity First Direct are withdrawing their 8% offer - hope it's back soon). Consider tying your money up for longer (though this doesn't appeal to me). Then there's Lloyds Vantage - up to £15K at 3%. (They did temporarily offer 4%.) There are usually conditions on these accounts, but you may not find them too onerous.

    Then you can try borrowing at 0% through credit card offers and, finally, take a risk and invest, though of course this is no good if you need instant cash.
    However hard up you are, never accept loans from your friends. Just gifts
