Windows 8 media centre activation probs

just received an email informing me to activate my media centre, there is a serial key in the email I follow these instructions but it doesn't get me to the part where I have to pop in the key

1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search.
2. (If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, and then click Search.)
3. Enter add features in the search box, and then tap or click Settings .

1. Tap or click Add features to Windows 8 and then do one of the following:

• 1. If you need to purchase a product key, tap or click I want to buy a product key online.
  You will be prompted through the steps to buy a product key from there and it will be entered for you.
• If you already have a product key, tap or click I already have a product key.

1. Enter your product key and click Next.
2. Read the license terms, select the check box to accept the license terms, and then click Add features.

Is it possible you've already activated it? I'm pretty sure the email is going to everyone who requested the key, whether they've already activated it or not?

If you go to Control Panel (from the same Settings screen you were on earlier) and then select System, what does it say under "Windows edition"?

when I get to the search bit I put add features and press search all I get is a box telling me to turn things on or off

When I first downloaded it when I bought windows 8 I was sure it was activated??

Well there's two activation steps you might have done:
a) activate Windows 8 itself
b) activate Media Center on top of that.

What does it say on that System screen?

it says windows 8 pro with media centre

Ah I reckon you already activated it then.

As a further check, at the bottom of that screen, it should have a link titled "View details in Windows Activation".

If you follow that link, there's a screen that shows you the last few characters of your "Current Product Key". Those last few characters should match the characters at the end of the Media Centre Product Key on the reminder email that came recently.
