Im sorry to hear about your poor little Rabbit, what a terrible shock for you!
I know you probably don't want to look now, but as you were concerned about Cats, I was just wondering whether there might be a wound concealed by all that thick winter fur, suggesting shock. Some days I wake up Grumpy ... Other days I let him lie in.0 -
I'm very sorry for your loss but it sounds as though he might have been suffering illness for some time now (you say he was matted with mess and sitting hunched up a few weeks ago?). Did you not think to take him to the vet to be checked over then?“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0

he cleaned himself up straight away and i didnt think.at the time anything other than hes got himself mucky by accident he messed up his hole hutch0

Hi OP, well done for keeping your pet successfully for so long, any bereavement, human or animal comes with the feeling of "perhaps I could have done more" but as time passes you will start to focus less on the event of the death but instead on happy memoriesYou never know how far-reaching something good, that you may do or say today, may affect the lives of others tomorrow0

So sorry to hear about your loss. Without an autopsy you will probably never know, but it could be any number of things beyond your control. I don't know much about rabbit health, but I keep rats and they can meet a smiliar end from a tumour in the brain.0

My post was not directed at the OP but at rabbits being kept outside in below freezing temperatures. I would be pleased if you would read it again. Had the OP rabbit died of the cold it would not have been in the ill state it was, it would have just been frozen stiff, with no other signs and if it came over that way then obviously I apologise.
I just feel it is wrong to leave a rabbit out in freezing weather no matter how many cover are on their hutches. I wouldnt leave my cat out and it is just as much of an animal pet as a rabbit is.
Rabbits actually cope better in the cold weather than in the summer. I have had rabbits for about 25 years and have always kept mine outside in a hutch/run. As long as they have plenty of hay/straw and the hutch is warm and free from drafts and damp they are absolutely fine. You can buy heat pads now to put in their hutches if need be.
One of my rabbits is small hand reared wildie, I was very worried about her being outside in the cold when she lost her partner, I stacked her bedroom full of hay yet she decided she didn't want it in there, pulled it all out and sat in the run instead.
I admit I would have been very concerned if my rabbits were outside in the recent freezing weather, I actually moved mine in the garage as mine are recently bonded and had been living in a run with no hutch just other means of shelter which I didn't feel were sufficient in the weather.0 -

I won't come back to this, I am very sorry for your loss. I am an experienced owner.
What a complete load of rubbish, I would be interested to hear what kind of 'experienced' owner you are.
Sorry to be so blunt but are you really suggesting that rabbits never be kept outside in a hutch/run???0 -
If you out your hand into the middle of hay where a rabbit has just vacated, it's pretty obvious they are well insulated - you could boil an egg thereYou never know how far-reaching something good, that you may do or say today, may affect the lives of others tomorrow0
