Do I Have To Tell DWP

Hello,
I am on ESA, DLA and full housing benefit.
I have just been told that I have won a car in a competition, needless to say I am delighted.
However, my friend has told me that I must tell the DWP as it is financial gain. Do I have to?

No, is the short answer unless you intend to sell it and save the cash in which case if it brings your total savings to over £6000 then you need to inform ESA and HB (that is presuming you are on income based ESA which with full HB you probably are)
Many congratulations :T0 -

You could use it to trade in for a newer car and no longer make any Motability payments. Selling it for cash then the cash has to be declared.frilly_knickers wrote: »:footie:

Good idea but...
If the OP's Motability Car is contract hire then this won't be an option as they are committed to keep the car for the period of the agreement. The only way out of the contract is either the vehicle has a major defects and cannot be repaired or if vehicle is no longer suitable on medical grounds.
Edit:
Potentially even a 'deal' could still happen here.
Usually a Motability customer has the option to purchase the vehicle at the end the contract after an independent inspection to establish value.
Mid term contract hire could be a possibility if Motability agree to provide a settlement figure. This is unusual. The dealership would process the 'deal' as outstanding finance regards the outstanding contract hire figure and stack the 'deal' up. The settlement is processed internally by the dealership.
However if the vehicle is on Motability Finance your idea would work.
Well done on your win...0 -

Thank you for your good wishes.
I have only had my Motability car for just over a year so it looks like I might have to sell it. The car is a Kia Picanto which sells at around £7k, however I am guessing that as it will still be classed as 2nd hand I will lose a fair bit.
I do have about £1.5k in savings so I guess I may have to juggle around to keep it under £6k, what sort of things can I buy without being accused of wasting money by DWP?0 -
You can replace or repair almost anything which is broken or worn out. They don't like anyone giving away money to get more benefits.frilly_knickers wrote: »Thank you for your good wishes.

Car, Ebay, Paypal, Visa, loan, cheque, faster payment transfer or any income or selling must INFORM DWP at all times because they very fussy over this!0

Joking aside, please ignore the majority of this. Someone having a rant at the welfare system.
Up to this the information given is correct
