Guarantee ownership

I am selling something on eBay. It will be quite expensive and lots of people are asking if I have original receipt.

Does the guarantee/warranty belong to the original purchaser or the item, i.e. if I sell this item and send the proof of purchase, which is a store statement, will the shop honour it?

Comments

  • There is no definitive answer as any warranty/guaranteee offered is at the discretion of thr retailer or manufacturer and because of this, they are entitled to have their own terms and conditions relating to that warranty.
Many companies do allow it to be transferred to a new owner, but you would have to check to see if this is the case with the item you have.

If the purchaser has the proof of purchase, how would the shop know it wasn't them that bought it? In any case, that's not your problem - if they ask about the receipt, just say yes you have it and are happy to pass on to them.

If lots of people are asking about receipts, are they just planning to take it back to the store?

It's an interesting one. Some companies (Apple for one) are happy to deal with items within warranty regardless of the fact they bought it second hand.
I did see a thread the other day where someone had purchased Beats headphones (genuine) from eBay and Beats refused to repair them because they hadn't come from an authorised source.

Is your item something that could be faked? People often ask to see a receipt as proof of authenticity.
