reinstalling vista would probably show a noticeable gain and save them from the scrapheap!!

Adding another GB of RAM to the Toshiba will certainly make a difference too.
If the HP came with 1GB RAM, then the same there too.
Factory Restore them both with the extra RAM and they should run fine, mechanics permitting.
I have a similar Toshiba laptop, but with 2GB RAM. It does what I need in a timely fashion.0 -
I agree with closed - installing or re-installing any operating system seems to give noticeable gains, I think it basically gets rid of some of the accumulated clutter.
I found that Windows 8 seemed to struggle with 1GB on a laptop with shared video memory (so even less than 1GB was available to the operating system). DDR2 667 Ram isn't too pricey to upgrade if your computer would allow it though (and again you'd get a noticeable performance gain whatever it's running).
However if you did want Windows 8, then make sure you buy the upgrade (even if you don't install it there and then) before the end of Jan when the prices go up. Running the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant will also tell you if it thinks your computer and its components are compatible with Windows 8.0
