Has anyone seen the adverts for surreyswitchandsave.org?

It's some kind of scheme to supposedly guarantee a fair price on energy (gas & electricity) run by Surrey County Council. You have to register via the website by 25 Feb, then various energy companies bid for the contract and you get emailed with some kind of deal, which you can accept or decline...

The best part is that it doesn't cost anything and is open to everyone -- even if you don't live in Surrey!

Sounds almost too good to be true...

Erm... okay... I'm guessing no one has heard of it then...

I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned before... I would have thought that this kind of "group purchasing" would be a pretty good way to buy energy...

Well... I'm already in the process of changing to EDF, but I signed up to the Surrey switching website anyway. I'll be interested to find out how competitive the deal they come up with actually is...

Which? ran a group purchase scheme ("The Big Switch") last year. Many energy companies declined to take part. The result was disappointing. I wonder how the Surrey scheme will succeed when Which's involving vast numbers of potential customers was disappointing.

Ahhh... okay. I did a few forum searches and couldn't find anything.

Oh well... I'll just wait and see and won't get my hopes up, then!

I wonder why they seemed to think you would get around £200 off the average household bill... Maybe they assume you're on the worst possible tariff to begin with...?

Cheers to you both for the replies...

£200 is supposedly the average saving when you switch, since 80% of the population have never switched, and are mostly on Standard tariffs.

The Which? one that I signed up an interest for turned out to cost me more so I declined their invitation in the end.

A similar scheme in Cornwall (except for prepayment meters) only offered tariffs that were already on offer on uSwitch.
"The offer I have is the same as I can find on uSwitch - why is that?
uSwitch are our delivery partners and have helped us negotiate and deliver the offers."

It seems that the best plan is simply to use a price comparison website and conduct your own reverse auction and find a supplier that is best for you not for a group of people who may have very different energy requirements to yourself.
