loobs40,
I think dougk has the right idea.
I live in Hemel and in my road at this time of year there always seems to be at least one house that is having work done on it.Just approach them and ask them to have a look.It does not sound as if its a big job for them.

Looks like I am going to have to resort to stalking builders while they are working on toher houses and pounce while they are not looking.0 -

I've already tried this..........now they scuttle away when they see me approaching, and the forman never did turn up to "take a look" as promised!Post Natal Depression is the worst part of giving birth:p
In England we have Mothering Sunday & Father Christmas, Mothers day & Santa Clause are American merchandising tricks:mad: Demonstrate pride in your heirtage by getting it right please people!0 -
I think one of the major factors that puts 'em off is asking for a quote. If you were wanting to hire one without getting a price first they'd be round like a shot.
The other thing they all want to know is whether it's an insurance job. When the neighbours insurance paid for my garden wall it cost them £950 for three hours work. Less materials, thats £300 an hour. No wonder insurance premiums are going up!0 -
Why dont you fix it yourself or get a mate to do it?
It will probably only be held on with four screws. If you get someone round and they agree to do the job it will most likely take them less than an hour.
It is not worth someone coming out to look at the job and then quoting etc.
If they do and you decide not to go ahead then the guy has lost money.
I am a self employed spark and you wouldnt believe the number of people who phone up for a quote for something minor ,get you to go round agree a price and then cancel the job the next day.Call someone ,tell em to bring there tools with them and if the price is ok get em to do it there and then.0 -
This is one of my bugbears as we've been let down numerous times by workmen not phoning or calling back , even when they've agreed to do the job :wall:
A couple of weeks ago we had 2 different blokes come to give us a quote for supplying electricity to our new garage and the first one got his quote back to us in a couple of days , but we still haven't got the other one , so my husband rang him up to ask him where it was and the bloke said " er...right , i'll get onto to it tomorrow and send you it" Still haven't received it :mad:Same old same old since 20080
