It's quite a useful expression to absolve the poor sods who work in benefit offices from any blame for what you get paid. :)
    I hear you.

The PCS Union has revealed that around 40% of DWP staff who will be working on Universal Credit will be on the benefit themselves.

Some part time workers at Jobcentres are likely to fall into this group, meaning that Jobcentre staff could be responsible for sending their colleagues, or even themselves, on workfare!

It's truly interesting time for everyone.

I fequently read a quote 'JSA is based on how much the law says you need to live on.' e.g £71 currently

Does anyone know which law this is?

Come April, JSA claimers will have to pay 20-25% of their council tax out of £71. Basically, this amount the law says is all of a sudden allowed to go down. Shouldn't the law need to reflect this new change to recalculate new JSA amount?
The law is the Jobseekers Act 1995 and any Statutory Instrument (SI) made under the Act.

The latest SI that governs how much will be paid is SI 2012/780.

The relevant pieces of legislation can be found at

There is time before April to find a job whist I agree with the decision I do think JSA claimants are less able than others who many councils exempt . Working is the only way out of this.

Which is exactly how it should be. Benefits should be just enough to live but low enough to make work pay and encourage you to do so!
    Thinking critically since 1996....

You may be writing to those that are already on JSA but what about those that are in work currently completely unaware that they will be made redundant due to company going bust which won't stop in March 2013. Those that become unemployed, no fault of their own, those that have paid into the system. You could say they should find next work as quickly as possible but they will be amongst the pool of people who are sending out their CV to 50 companies a week, 200 applicants all applying to a one position.

Many on jsa will not get help anyway, I never my friends never and full council tax needed paying anyway.

My advise to those as always is to insure as the govt won't.

I know that's what I'm feeling but there isn't such thing as 'NI opt-out', is there? This is really proving that not much point in paying NI.
