Turning off 3g on phone

Options
Hi

I've got a Samsung Galaxy W and up until recently I was getting a day's battery life maybe.

But I've discovered that by pressing and holding the power button i can deactivate Data Network Mode which turns off 3g. I can still make and receive calls and texts.

With 3g and wifi turned off i now get 2 days battery life and if i want to use an app which requires internet connection, i can easily turn on 3g or wifi easily.

I'm surprised more people don't do this. I suppose if you use the internet alot it may not be practical but for me, the pros outweigh the cons.

turn of gps as well, get even more life. turn of bluetooth (if on), Reduce brightness of the screen. Turn wifi off, until you need to use it. Set sleep mode to go off sooner.

Plenty of ways to extend battery life

It will partially depend on the phone - on some of the older models I had, keeping 3G on would just kill them but with the current one its power saving modes work pretty well so I can keep 3G and wifi on without much of a hit on batterylife. It's when I'm actively using the data connection that the battery really takes a hammering but there's not much I can do about that.

  • Yeah, i already turned off wifi, bluetooth, gps when not in use, minimised brightness, minmised time to sleep mode, don't use live wallpapers etc etc etc

Doing all that got me just over a days battery life, but by turning off 3g as well, i now get 2 days battery life - its made a huge difference.

I wouldn't use aiirplane mode though, because i wouldn't be able to make or receive calls and texts.

There are a lot of phones out there which are very inefficient when it comes to conserving battery life. More modern/premium devices tend not to have these issues.

There is also the fun factor. Having fun stuff running because you want to play/see fun stuff.

There's the "uhh buy a non-smart phone" factor lastly. Where people turn so much off to gain elusive battery life that you just think should've bought non-smart ;)

And of course you have access to potential charging points far more often now, so does it matter if you have to charge every night?
