    I looked up ginnel. Apparently, it's Shared Access To Rear Of Property or passageway. Think they are only up north (coronation st springs to mind:D)as I've never seen them anywhere in the south. Here is a pic.

    Is that elsie tanner in the pic ? LOL

    Many down south too. Typically used by the coal man for deliveries. Dover has many streets like this and london too although many torn down during the regeneration projects early last century.

    Sorry didn't mean to open debabte on tv licences.

    Afternoon everyone including the oldies :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
    I have been in stitches reading these sayings.
    For living room when we were at home we used to say in the house, funny thing was mum and dad live in a bungalow not even a house :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
    We always said entry when we lived in our house , but at home (m&d) we said the side
    For shutting the door we used to say "born in a barn?"
    For dinning room at my pap's we said table room never dinning room, we never had a dinning room had to get table out everyday
    Wierd these sayings!

    when we lived in a house with a close, it was called a ginnell. No idea if that's how it's spelt :D

    My nan also had a 'landing light' which always used to make me think of runways and aeroplanes when I was little :rotfl::rotfl:
    :rotfl::rotfl:
    I've always called the light at the top of the stairs the landing light but never thought about it in that sense. Funny the things you say but never realise that they could be misconstrued by someone who hasn't come across the word/phrase:)

    I don't have a TV license, but then I don't have a tv either. I don't watch it enough to justify the TV license price, but I would have one if I didn't have to pay for it, for those very rare occasions when I have someone over who likes tv noise in the background. I don't even watch tv online directly, though occasionally watch catch-up tv which is legal to do without a license (or was, last time I checked). I do wonder if the previous tenant paid a tv licensse for this flat in advance, though. Haven't had any letters or knocks on the door yet about it.

    I do grab netflix free trials whenever they are offered, and catch up on old movies and tv series that way when I'm bored. :D
