Uninstalling Avast

My operating system is XP Home Edition.
I was running Zonealarm (which has been uninstalled now) and Avast.
Avast is refusing to update so I decided to uninstall and install MSE
However, when I go to add/remove programs and click on Avast, the screen blinks and then nothing happens.
Please advise the best way to uninstall.
