How often do EDF bill?

According to my online account, our first EDF bill won't be for 9 months; I queried it with them and they said that if you pay by Direct Debit you don't get a regular bill. I could understand quarterly or annual billing, but 9 months seems a bit arbitrary.

It's not a huge issue, but I'd prefer more regular reminders to read the meter and a bill to follow - with nPower it was done quarterly. This helps me keep track of our spend and usage. I asked them about it and they said it can't be done; either I specially request a bill or I just get them whenever EDF feel like generating one.

Is this usual for EDF? How often do other EDF customers get meter reminders / bills?

Direct debit customers get one reminder a year prior to the 'annual review' date.

In addition, Statements are generated every meter reading (customer or actual) submitted more that 30 days since the last reading generated Statement.

Thanks - I'll just set up my own calendar reminders to read my meters then. It seems weird that with the current focus on monitoring energy usage that (a) EDF don't really seem interested in getting more regular readings and (b) you can't set up meter reminders via the online account panel.
  • Edf were in the forefront of dispensing with traditional meter readings, meter readers and billing, when this French company moved into this UK all in the interests of lowering their overheads and increasing the mark up. British Gas and others started to follow their methods. We meter readers could nt believe their antics when we started working for them, eg they would send us out at haphazard times, not every quarter, and often just read one of the meters in the house when they supplied both gas and electric. Customers would be baffled by this, i just used to say, thats how the French work. They also have the worst Revenue Protection team going, virtually non existant. Bypassed meters found, remained bypassed even 6 months after reporting them. They are a shambles

If you read other threads about EDF you will note that every time you send in meter readings it triggers a change in your DD, usually massively upwards and with no justification. So I would advise anyone NOT to send in regular readings. Keep your own records, work out yourself what your bills will be and if your payments are about right, but only send readings in when asked or just before the annual review. (or of course if they change the tariff or put prices up)

I agree with the other comment though - this company is truly shambolic

    ^^^ I'll second that.
Important to track your own usage and costs though, to make sure your monthly payments will cover your annual cost.
Doing EDF's job for them, but it seems to be the only way.

I use iMeasure to track my meter readings every week (free to register; they email you every Monday to remind you to log the meter readings).

'EDF Meter Reading' put a meter reading card through my letterbox 10 days ago. I input the readings online and got a bill through within 48 hours. As the opening readings were estimates (they didn't use my figures when I transferred to them ... ), they are lowering my DD by over 10%.

However, 3 days after the bill was received, I received a meter reading card from G4S. I ignored it and got a second one the following day from G4S, which I complied with.

I have no idea why two different meter reading services are seeking to read my meter within a week and after a bill has been issued !!

Like I said, thats the way the French do it, shambolic. I often turn up on a doorstep when another meter reading companys already been. Thanks EDF for wasting my time. I work for G4S and am now used to all EDFs tricks. Unfortunately British Gas have followed the French lead and become if anything a lot worse, including employing outside call centres phoning up customers, usually the retired, to crawl about getting meter readings for them before I come. Anything go s now with meter reading, thank god I am retiring soon

By entering your Meter reads every Quarter, EDF will produce an online bill each time which gives you those valuable seasonal readings and annual consumption.

You are still likely to get the nonsense D/Debit changes, but an Email quoting your annual consumption based on their own bills, usually gets them back on track
