Where to get cheap but good quality carpet???

We're moving into a new home in about 4 weeks time - the previous owners had dogs and pretty much ruined the carpets that are in there, as we're renting we don't want to pay too much for carpets but with a toddler and a baby we can't afford to have manky carpets!!

Any suggestions as to the best places to get half decent carpets at reasonably cheap prices??? Thanks!

We don't have much carpet in our house, mainly tiles and laminate. We found even the better quality laminate cheaper than an 'average' carpet.
The best carpet shops by us are mainly local ones, not part of chains. It may pay you to look around in your area, you may fall lucky and get some good room sized remnants.;)

I would recommend using a local vetted and monitored tradesman, rather than just finding a local retailer. The site http://www.checkatrade.com relies on customer recommendations and you can see the companies' portfolio, what customers have said about them, good and bad points. As a tradesman your not going to put your reputation on the line if your not confident about your business's reliability. Smaller shops and local tradesmen can work out alot cheaper, so shop around. Get quotations from a handful of business's to ensure you get the best price.

Beware of the accessories price, the big high-street stores are guilty of these inflated extras. I would get a broken down price including fitting, delivery and accessories. A carpet could be £5 a Sqm but the large shop's probably added an extra £5 a Sqm for the accessories. Beware of the salesman's tactic of requiring a deposit to maintain the deal he/she's done for you. Don't be pushed into anything, take your time, compare the written quotes at home. Make sure you are comparing like for like, so 'feel' the carpet. One carpet may "look" the same as another carpet, but it may "feel" completely different, go for a carpet with years warranty, these are likely to be higher quality. Trust your insticts, its very easy to feel the quality difference in carpet (thin and flimsy = bad quality) (thick and dense = good quality).

Looks like spam to me so I reported it.

Without the ad at the end it looks like sensible advice.
