Things to do in the Liverpool/Cheshire area with kids on a short break

Morning all, We're on a very tight budget at the moment and were thinking of taking the kids away for a short midweek break to the Liverpool/Cheshire area as it's not too far from us. The red squirrel reserve at Formby was a favourite with my kids. Poor squirrels have been decimated by illness but I believe the numbers are on the increase again. It's a short walk to the lovely beach, and very little to spend money on except for peanuts for the squirrels.
