The Secret Diary of MrsRainman, aged 31 and 3/4

  • The car is mended :D. Dad paid for the new battery for me then he and MrR fitted it, in the pouring rain. Scooter is being collected today. Hopefully it will be fixed quickly and MrR can go back to spending £6.00 a week on petrol instead of £30.

Received email confirmation of our £9.50 holiday today :). Can't wait. 2nd week of May so fingers crossed the weather plays nice!

I mentioned to MrR that I'd been looking in to ways to earn a bit of extra money, just £100 a month or so. The only things I've come up with so far are the usual suspects of Party Planning and Selling. His instant reaction was "you don't want to be getting involved in that sort of thing". Well thanks for being so supportive!!!! That is why this is my secret diary!!

  • Just made the mistake of looking on trip advisor at the holiday park we've been allocated :(

Fingers crossed it's ok when we get there.

  • Hi there, just been reading your diary, wow, not sure how you cope. im sure i would be worried sick how to pay the credit cards off. Does MrR give any support? or is this all left for you to ?
Im sure cutting back on wine, would save £200! we all need to tighten our belts at some time or other but im sure setting out what you owe and making a start on where you can target the cut backs etc. good luck in your quest . x
    .
  • Thanks for reading Pantherchick. I used to worry about the credit cards but that wasn't really getting me anywhere. Now I just accept that they are there and I will keep chipping away slowly. Enough goes in to the joint account to cover the minimum payments on them.
I pay £250 a month in to the joint acc. and MrR puts in £700 so he pays his fair share. I probably buy 80-90% of the food. The rest of MrR's wages goes on petrol, DD for LittleR and his expensive friend.
I wish it was easy to just say to him "stop spending" but until he reaches his LBM and gets a grip on his alcohol issues this is how things will be. And I cope because I have to.

Nothing much to report today. I'm feeling a little low and stuck in a rut. Just trying to enjoy and hour of quiet while LittleR has her nap.

  • Gosh, I'm in a wine club, I like wine but I pay 100 pounds every 3 months. That way my friend wine doesn't cost too much nor does it kill me by wiping out my liver! I'd have a word with your hubby about alcohol abuse and how it could kill him very young. To be honest with you, spending that amount of money on wine per month when his wife has credit card debts to the level you have is plain irresponsible. You need to put your foot down with him and tell him the facts straight. You'll never get nor keep if you did get, your own home if he spends and continues to spend that sort of money on wine. I'd ask him to buy a very large insurance policy to cover me and our child should he pass away from cirrhosis of the liver! I know I sound harsh, but goodness, you work your butt off stacking shelves so he can waste 200 pounds a month on alcohol. That money he wastes would add up to 2,400 pounds per year! If he paid that to your credit card instead of washing it up against porcelain your credit card debt and default would be gone in no time at all.

You both want your dream of your own house, tell him to stop the wine! pay off those cards and then save that 200 pounds a month for a house deposit. You'll get nowhere in life with a hubby spending that sort of money on wine every month. Make him listen, I sure would. I would not tolerate that at all.

You're not saying anything that I don't know already. And He knows as well. Unfortunately life with a (functioning) alcoholic isn't Black and White :(

It never occurred to me that he was alcoholic. You must love him a lot to be so tolerant. If it helps you any, when I met my hubby he was in the army and drank more than a fish, he was an alcoholic. He asked me to marry him 3 weeks after we met and I said no way would I live with, love or stay with an alcoholic. Stop the drink or I'm gone. He did. It was a struggle for him the first 12 months (we married 3 months after meeting) and every time he thought about drink I reminded him what he would lose - me and our home as I would kick him out! He never touched another drop, ever. We celebrated 25 years of marriage last August. He's as fit as a chip, looks 10 years younger than he is and he is alive, successful and happy today because I put my foot down. He would have been dead or in jail had he not met me and had I not been firm. Actions and consequences. Point them out to him. Make a rule and stick to it. Your life will be ruined by alcoholism, no one is worth that. Stand up to him and make him stop, its what he needs, its the only way, else this will be a pattern for your whole life and it will be a miserable life not a happy successful one. My hubby spend more than that on alcohol when I met him, I took his bank card two weeks after meeting :D he didn't waste that money again.
  • Well thank goodness for my shopping voucher this week!! The trouble with going to an unfamiliar shop is that I tend to spend more. As I had the voucher I took the opportunity to stock up on a few bits as the cupboards were starting to look very bare, but the bill was still higher than I would have spent. Oh well, back to normal next week. I'm on count down to payday so there won't be much spending this week.

Bought LittleR a new toy on ebay. Minimal spend though, only £5 and it's local so I can collect it. It's part of the Little People collection. I would love to be able to buy her things like that new but just can't justify the prices when I can pick them up in such good condition second hand.

My current "thing" is playing online free bingo. I don't make a special effort (please don't think I sit here all day playing Bingo while LittleR is left to entertain herself), but if I have the PC on while she has her nap I have the game running in the background. I've only won 50 pence so far!! :rotfl:

Off to a Stay and Play session this afternoon at the Childrens Centre. An hour and a half of noisy playing and mess!! But it only costs a £1 and LittleR gets a snack as well :D

  • Pay Day!!! Woohooo!!!! :j
Although only a light one this time as I'd only done an extra 3 hours over my contract. So over half of it went straight into the joint account for bills. I need to put £10 on my phone and put £20 aside for a haircut. Me and LittleR went to the shop this morning and spent £20 on a few bits. So that leaves me with a grand total of £166 for the next 4 weeks. I should be fine. We have plenty of food in the freezer so will just have to top up for the next couple of weeks.
I do get an annual bonus from work in a couple of weeks. It's not much and I'm hoping to use it to get the carpets cleaned.
Bagged myself a couple of bargins this week. 12 pork rib steaks for £1 and 500g of casserole beef for 96p :D. They were missed by the Mark-down team during the day so when I spotted them just before my shift end at 9.30pm I got a colleague to mark them down. Some went on to the shelf for a lucky customer, some went home with me :p

All in all, not a bad week. And I have some overtime this weekend. Every little helps....(ooops, wrong catch phrase for my place of work)

  • Thought I'd log on to update my signature. £19.50 on the Christmas saving card now. I'm being really strict with putting my discount saving on to the card. I think it will make a difference when I get to christmas and I have plenty of money for really nice food :D
Only a couple of bargins in the last few days at work. 2 packs of 10p Prawns and 2 loaves of 10p bread. Working in the evenings does have it's advantages.

I was looking in to booking the ferry for our holiday and discovered that I can use my Clubcard vouchers to pay for it. Instead of £40 it will cost me 2 phone calls and Recorded Postage for the vouchers. Happy Days :j
And I won 50pence on the free bingo yesterday. Which I then used to play a 5pence game, and won £7.85. Woohoo!! :rotfl:
If I get to £10 I will withdraw my winnings and put it towards the CC debt. Not much i know, but it's money from nothing.

Just waiting for LittleR to wake up from her nap. She will be so pleased with the stickers I have just bought for her online. Whenever she has one from toddler group she runs around with her chest puffed out shouting "'ticker, 'ticker, 'ticker!"
