Student Credit Card

Options
Before you all say don't get a credit card and so on. I have to get a credit card because I have some money issues (loan company didn't pay my last installment), I have bills to pay and I can't keep asking my parents for money.

Before you say 'get a job' I need something to tide me over while I search for one.

Can anyone recommend the best student credit card? I am considering either egg card or HSBC (because I have a student account with them).

  • Barclays does a student Barclaycard. Not sure how good the rate is but you can get a standard £600 limit without much worry over what your credit history is like. You also get some vouchers. Just pay it off as soon as you can!
They say you can't put a value on life... but I live it at half price!

i don't think you'll get any particularly nice rate with a student credit card, but then i don't think you can get the nice 0% for a few months ones without a 'proper job'. i'd speak to HSBC and see what they can offer you.

Avoid Egg. The standard APR isn't great (used to be better), however they've started jacking up APRs for existing customers, mine has gone up by almost 10%. They've also been extremely nasty when it comes to people reclaiming charges (counter-claims, defaults, general harassment and bullying).

Don't be swayed by the guinea pigs.

Would it be cheaper to extend your overdraft? Go have a chat with you bank, and they may be able to offer you an overdraft increase at 0% interest, and if not at a cheaper % rate than a credit card...
Don't pay off your student loan quicker than you have to.

I got 0% on purchases for 6 months with my Halifax One card and I'm still at uni (no job or anything). The rate is awful though after that.

As Joe said, see if you can get an overdraft increase first though.

    LOL! thanks. :D

I have to admit, the guinea pigs really influenced my initial decision to go with egg card.

I tried to get a student credit card with HSBC and I was rejected and no reason was given.
