Sky cancellation - does this sound right to you?

Having been with sky for 10yrs plus and never had a special offer, a friend of mine took them up on their half price movies for 3 months over christmas. He then discovered humax recorders and has purchased one of those so wants to cancel his sky subscription completely.

They are saying because the movies are ending, he already has one cancellation taking place and cannot have two running at the same time. They are making him pay for another month. Can this be right? He gave 31 days notice as he should, surely he is entitled to do that regardless of whether his movies are already in the cancellation process?

I suspect this is because you cancelled at the same time. If you had cancelled the sports, then the next day you called to cancel the rest then it would be an issue.

Sounds like they are pulling a fast one to me. If the contract doesn't state this I don't see how they can upheld it. Give them notice as per the terms of the contract (in writing or other durable form; or record the call or something if their terms allow cancellation over the phone) and let them chase you for the rest

I often find it depends a lot on who you get on the other end of the phone. If I do not get the help or answer I want, I just phone back until I get someone who is more helpful. Usually works.

To be honest your friend is actually quite lucky. Sky often say that by taking up an offer (for example half price movies for 3 months) that puts you on a new 12 month contract. Then your friend wouldn't be able to cancel at all!

There was no minimum term on the offer from Sky.

This isn't Virgin Media you know ;)

Sky occasionally give me 6 months sports free, however they always send a letter after telling me by taking the deal I have signed up for another 12 months! Still i'm not going to leave anyway so its not a big deal!
