Liability for wrong returns sent

Hi Guys,
I really need some advice here. I have recently sold some items on ebay, I had one customer emailing me repeatedly to ask me where his refund was. I asked him when he sent the item back and how. He had no tracking details so I asked him to wait in case it had been delayed some how.
I then got an email on Friday to tell me that the item had been returned back to him from a unknown address no where near where I am based. He told me he would then send the parcel back out to me. It arrived here on monday but sadly I sell shoes and what he sent was a computer. I emailed the customer to let him know he had sent me a computer instead of the shoes and he replied asking me to forward this onto another address. I refused and told him that I could not be held accountable should the items not reach the address he had requested (I was being to grow very suspicious by this point) so I told him I would send the computer back to him.
I sent the computer back on a next day signed for service with Royal Mail and it was signed for yesterday morning. Now this customer is saying he hasn't received the computer back!!!!
I had a feeling he would say this as looking at his ebay feedback history he doesn't seem like the nicest of ebayers.
What can I do in this situation??

have you checked you actually have a sale with his buyer?
who paid to return the item to him?
did you return to the buyers address or return address on the packaging?0 -
Hi,
Yeah I sold him a pair of boots in November and he asked at the end of december if he could send them back.
The computer was sent through my business on Wednesday and signed for on Thursday.
I sent it back to the address we originally sent the boots to, that was also his returns address specified on the packaging.
I just get the feeling that something funny is going on. I don't want to accept liability for the return, as it says it has been delivered and I had a feeling he would say that it never reached him.
I don't know what to do.0 -
personally I would do nothing at this point, except block them0

There are so many of these floating around. Clearly a scam of some description. there are more listed here.

Always possible that this is a mix between the return scam and the product swap. It's strange that they have sent a computer back? If they are asking you to send it somewhere else is it possible that the computer is stolen goods that they are trying to ship elsewhere?
Possibly a little too over the top but just throwing suggestions around

Did you sign for the computer?
If not, I'd be tempted to say it never turned up to you. No liability then

The parcel was sent recorded so we did sign for it sadly. But under the assumption it was a pair of boots (which is what he said he was sending back).
I haven't heard back from him in a while so maybe he has realised he isn't getting anything out of us. I work so hard on being a good ebayer! It's really annoying how some people try to take advantage of that
